Technician Onboarding Overview (Step-by-Step Training Plan)

Daily Tasks During the Training Period

 

Week 1

Day 1: Introduction & Car & House Lockouts

  • Meet with the local manager or trainer.

  • Watch senior technicians handle car and house lockouts, then practice doing it themselves.

  • Hands-on car lockout training: Unlock the driver and passenger sides of cars in the parking lot at least five times each.

  • Drill a variety of locks:

    • Deadbolts through screws (both sides) and the keyhole.

    • Knobs, mortise locks, and more.

  • Discuss job types:

    • Car/House lockouts, rekeying, key coding, and cutting (using Lishi and Xhorse tools).

 

Day 2: Company Introduction | Hardware & Rekeying

  • Learn company policies and procedures.

  • Train on different hardware, focusing on rekeying locks.

  • Practice installing and repairing locks around the office or a house.

  • Hands-on with essential tools:

    • Handpicks and Lishi (critical focus).

    • Smart locks and advanced lock types.

  • Rekeying practice:

    • Techniques include shimming, master rekeying, removing top springs, and respringing with top pins.

 

Day 3: Car Keys

  • Introduction to car key cutting and programming.

  • Learn lock picking and decoding with Lishi (extremely important).

  • Train on various car keys:

    • Programming using Xhorse devices.

    • Ignition changes and repairs (e.g., Honda/Acura).

 

Day 4: Commercial Hardware

  • Full day focused on commercial hardware.

  • Preparation for government jobs, emphasizing compliance and security protocols.

  • Watch 5–10 videos for deeper understanding.

 

Day 5: Testing & Practical Applications | CRM System

  • Comprehensive testing of skills learned in Week 1.

  • Apply practical knowledge to build proficiency and confidence.

  • Learn to use Workiz CRM system:

 

Day 6: Field Training (Day 1)

  • Go out to the field and handle jobs alongside senior techs.

  • Ensure the trainee gets similar jobs to reinforce learning.

  • Understand the real-world connection between technical skills and sales.

 

Week 2

Day 7: Field Training (Day 2)

  • Continue working in the field, handling similar jobs to deepen understanding and gain confidence.

 

Day 8: Field Training (Day 3)

  • Final day of field training, ensuring the tech fully grasps the job flow and sales techniques.

 

Day 9: Safe & Cabinet Locks | Advanced Lishi Training

  • Safe & Cabinet Locks:

  • Lishi Training:

    • Intensive practice (5–6 hours).

    • Ideally, practice in a junkyard to explore different car key types.

 

Day 10: Sales Techniques

  • Learn how to effectively sell locksmith services and upsell additional items (e.g., extra keys or keypads).

  • Understand customer needs and learn to present solutions effectively.

  • Ride along with senior techs to observe sales techniques and explanations.

 

Day 11: Final Assessment & Review

  • Final practical exam covering all skills learned during training.

  • Review training material and provide feedback.

  • Address any skills gaps to ensure readiness for solo work.
